Conflict Triage™
CIIAN's Conflict Triage™ Program:
Workplace Conflict Assessment & Early Intervention
When conflict reaches HR or a people leader, there is rarely a clear story. Emotions are high, details are incomplete, and the pressure to act is immediate. What happens in those first moments often determines whether the situation settles or escalates.
Conflict Triage™ is a certificate program designed for professionals who do not just want to understand conflict, but want to handle it skillfully in real time. It focuses on the front end, where conversations are sensitive, decisions are uncertain, and missteps can have lasting consequences.
By the end, you are not left second-guessing your approach or reacting on instinct. You are able to step into difficult situations with a steady approach, respond in a way that reduces tension rather than inflames it, and move the situation forward with confidence and sound judgement.
Program Overview
The Conflict Triage™ Certificate Program combines foundational learning with a three-day applied intensive.
Participants first complete CIIAN’s Learning Module One: Self and Others (online prerequisite), which introduces core concepts in conflict dynamics and behaviour.
This is followed by a three-day live Conflict Triage™ training focused on realistic workplace scenarios, structured assessment tools, early-stage interventions, and practical decision-making.
The program is designed to strengthen HR professionals and organisational leaders ability to respond effectively when conflict first reaches them, assessing the situation, intervening constructively, and making sound decisions about whether to stabilise, pursue informal resolution, or escalate the matter.
What Participants Will Learn
Participants develop practical skills for managing the early stages of workplace conflict, including how to:
- apply the Conflict Triage™ framework to guide the intial response when conflict is raised
- quickly determine what is actually happening and how serious the situation is
- identify power dynamics, hidden threats, and expectation gaps driving the dispute
- intervene constructively with individuals through targeted one-party conversations to de-escalate tensions and stabilise the situation
- use shuttle-style engagement to clarify misunderstandings and explore opportunities for informal resolution
- gather relevant information without inflaming positions or prematurely triggering formal processes
- make defensible decisions about whether a situation should stabilise, move toward informal resolution, or escalate to mediation, investigation, or formal complaint processes
Conflict Triage™ helps professionals handle workplace conflict early—stabilising situations, resolving issues informally where possible, and escalating only when necessary.
faq
This program is designed for HR professionals and people leaders responsible for handling workplace conflict at an early stage.
It is particularly relevant for those who are often the first point of contact when issues arise, including HR advisors, managers, supervisors, and designated recipients. It is suited to professionals who want to handle these situations more confidently, consistently, and effectively.
After completing the program, participants are better equipped to respond effectively when conflict first arises.
They are able to stabilise high-emotion situations, understand what is driving the issue, and make sound decisions about what should happen next. They also develop the practical skill to carry out those decisions, working constructively with individuals to de-escalate tensions, clarify issues, and move situations forward.
The focus is on practical capability, so participants leave with a clear approach they can apply immediately in real workplace situation
When workplace conflict first reaches HR, emotions are often high and information is incomplete. Decisions made during these early conversations can shape the entire trajectory of the dispute.
Handled poorly, situations can quickly escalate into formal complaints, investigations, and entrenched positions. Handled well, many conflicts can stabilise before reaching that stage.
Conflict Triage™ equips professionals with the skills to intervene earlier, de-escalate effectively, and guide workplace disputes toward constructive resolution where appropriate.
Mediation training focuses on facilitating negotiations between parties once a conflict has already been formalised.
Conflict Triage™ focuses on what happens before that point.
The program is designed for the moment when conflict first reaches HR and professionals must decide how to respond — whether to stabilise the situation, explore informal resolution, or escalate to formal processes such as mediation or investigation.
It strengthens the judgement and intervention skills required at this front end of conflict management.
Organisations benefit when HR professionals are able to respond confidently and consistently at the front end of workplace conflict.
Training HR staff in Conflict Triage™ helps organisations:
• reduce unnecessary escalation into formal complaints, investigations, and grievances
• stabilise emotionally charged situations before positions harden
• support appropriate opportunities for informal or negotiated resolution
• apply a consistent framework for responding to conflict concerns
• ensure early decisions are well-reasoned, documented, and defensible within organisational risk and liability considerations
The result is more disciplined conflict management and fewer disputes progressing unnecessarily into formal processes.
Conflict Triage™ introduces a structured assessment and decision framework that supports clear reasoning and consistent criteria when determining how a situation should proceed.
This enables organisations to demonstrate that decisions about stabilisation, informal resolution, or escalation were thoughtful, proportionate, and grounded in a clear process.
The focus is not just on selecting a formal pathway, but on how to work constructively with conflict from the moment it first arises.
Yes. The program is particularly relevant for professionals responsible for receiving workplace harassment or violence concerns under Bill C-65.
The framework taught in Conflict Triage™ supports the early stages of these processes, including stabilising individuals, clarifying concerns, and identifying opportunities for negotiated or informal resolution where appropriate.
It also helps professionals determine when a matter should move forward into formal complaint or investigation processes.
Conflict Triage™ is an applied professional development program focused on real-world situations.
It is designed for HR professionals, managers, and organisational leaders who are responsible for handling workplace conflict and want to strengthen how they respond in those early, often high-pressure moments.
While many participants bring experience in HR, labour relations, or leadership, the program is accessible to anyone with a genuine interest in improving how they handle conflict and a willingness to engage with the material and apply it in practice.
The Conflict Triage™ Certificate Program combines foundational learning with applied practice.
